ECUADOR

Ecuador boasts a wealth of natural riches, from the Amazon rainforest to the Galapagos Islands to its spectacular glaciated volcanic peaks. For mountain enthusiasts and those looking to gain some mountaineering experience, Ecuador offers exciting and accessible high altitude mountaineering options. After exploring the colonial buildings in Ecuador's capital, take some time to explore Ecuador's Avenue of Volcanoes or take a day-hike that will take you to new heights and offer you a spectacular view of Quito.

COTOPAXI

Ecuador's second highest peak, Cotopaxi (5,897m) can be done as a 2-day trip with an overnight stay at the José Rivas Refuge. This trip requires a moderate level of fitness. Packages for Cotopaxi including an acclimatization schedule are available.

CHIMBORAZO

Chimborazo (6,263m) is Ecuador's highest peak and an accessible high altitude mountaineering objective. Chimborazo can be done as a 2-day trip involving an overnight camp at the Edward Whymper Refuge or the option to stay at high camp. This trip requires a moderate level of fitness. Packages for Chimborazo including an acclimatization schedule are available.

Full-Day Hikes

Have a limited schedule but want to get in a good hike that takes you up high and offers great views? There are several options for guided day-hikes that are accessible from Quito, including Rucu Pichincha, Fuya Fuya, Ruminahui, El Corazon, and Pasachoa. These hikes are also great acclimatization hikes if you are considering a high altitude mountaineering trip during your time in Ecuador.

Multi-Day Treks

A popular multi-day trek, the Quilotoa Loop takes you through the Andean highlands where you are surrounded by lush hills and valleys. The 3-day circuit connects remote villages in the highlands and allows you to enjoy a laidback pace and getaway from urban life in Ecuador. The highlight of the loop is reaching the Quilotoa Crater, a spectacular 3km-wide lagoon filled in a volcanic crater. Other options for multi-day treks include treks in Cotopaxi or Chimborazo National Parks to explore the network of trails.
